Top tips for a pet safe Halloween

Thursday 26 October 2017

Halloween can be a festive and fun time for children and families the world over, but for our beloved pets it can be a complete nightmare, fearful and frightening.

As many of us include our pets in the spooky festivities, so we really think about their needs and what is best for them? Here are some of our top tips for looking after your pets at Halloween.

  • Trick-or-treat themed food and sweets must not be given to your pets, this will more than likely make them unwell or very sick due to the ingredients which are not pet friendly.
  • Don't leave pets outside on Halloween night, it’s possible that early fireworks or loud noise will be going off, which can and will scare our pets.
  • Keep glow sticks and Halloween theme decorations away from pets.
  • Keep Halloween plants such as pumpkins and corn out of reach. As tempting as they are to give your pet a taste, these can prove indigestible and can cause sickness or worse to your pets.
  • Don't keep lit pumpkins around pets, if your pet gets scared they could knock it over and potential fire risk to themselves and your home.
  • Keep electric and battery-powered Halloween decorations out of reach.
  • Don't dress your pet in a costume unless you know they'll love it, our pets might look cute but they also need to feel comfortable and not be restricted within their movement.
  • Always make sure your pet has their ID tags on their collars if you are talking them out with you.
  • Make sure they know they have a safe comfortable place to go if things become too much for them, loud music, scary noises from the TV can potentially scare your pet.
