UK Dog Theft Statistics

Monday 26 March 2018

New Research shows that around five or more dogs are being stolen everyday with those numbers set to increase, and out of those stolen only one or two might be found and returned to their families, this is truly shocking and frightening to all dog owners.

Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show a 22.3% rise in reports in two years. Thieves tend to target Staffordshire bull terriers and tiny toy-designer breeds, like miniature French bulldogs, and pugs, popular with celebrities, the figures suggest.

Under UK law, pet theft is seen as no different to the theft of an inanimate object – despite pets being sentient beings. This means that if someone is caught stealing a Labrador, they are likely to get the same sentence as if caught stealing a laptop.

The ten most stolen breeds of dogs.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier - 634 stolen – 42%of all stolen breeds
Chihuahua - 143 – 9%
Jack Russell - 111 – 7%
Crossbreed - 76 – 5%
French Bulldog - 53 – 4%
Lurcher - 42 – 3%
Labrador - 41 – 3%
Pug - 36 – 2%
Bulldog - 35 – 2%
Cocker Spaniel - 35 – 2%

There is also a growing market for these stolen dogs – often fuelled by unsuspecting new owners or backyard breeders – and while they continue to be of value to thieves, the trend in dog thefts will sadly continue. Despite a call for harsher sentencing for dog theft crimes, the theft of a dog in the Britain is currently still categorized as the theft of personal possessions (the equivalent offence of stealing a mobile phone).

If your dog has been stolen then it is always best to act quickly, please contact your local police and council dog warden, who will be able to give you further help and advice.
